By the 1890s, the American frontier had largely been tamed, closing the chapter on lawlessness, exploration, and conflicts with Native tribes. Yet across the globe, a new age of adventure was dawning—big-game hunting and exploration. Much like the pioneers who settled the West, British sportsmen journeyed into the uncharted territories of Africa and Asia, carving their names into legend and elevating their rifles into prized treasures sought by collectors worldwide.

Celebrated by both hunting enthusiasts and the press, the 1885 Courteney stalking rifle was named in honor of famed English hunter, explorer, and naturalist F. Courteney Selous (1851–1917). Designed to capture the look, feel, and practicality of the classic British single-shots carried to the colonies at the turn of the century, the Courteney offers today’s shooter that same heritage—at a fraction of the cost. Built on the robust 1885 action, it debuted in 2020 chambered in the iconic .303 British, the cartridge most widely used across the Empire. It is now also available in .45-70, making it perfectly suited for states permitting straight-walled cartridges.

Equally at home in the whitetail woods or on safari abroad, the Courteney stands as a distinctive and dependable companion for hunters seeking tradition, performance, and adventure.

FEATURES

  • Weaver Rings and Rear Sight: Sports a quarter-rib slotted for a set of Weaver rings and outfitted with a fully-adjustable shallow-V rear sight. It also comes with a traditional hooded ramp front sight as well as a barrel-mounted sling-swivel–just like the old classics. For best results, we recommend using a low-power scope and rings marked “high.”
  • Prince of Wales Buttstock: The stock of the 1885 Courteney is quintessentially British. The Prince of Wales buttstock is complemented by a classic recoil pad, while the slim, tapered fore-end features a contrasting tip, fittingly realized in African heartwood.
  • Base: For those not wishing to use this rifle with a scope, a plain quarter rib, on which the adjustable V-sight may be mounted, is available as an accessory.
